The Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo is headquartered in a special area in Ibirapuera Park, in the central area of the city, as part of the landscape and architectural structure projected by Oscar Niemeyer in the period 1953-1954.
The Museum was designed by Lina Bo Bardi and built over the marquise of the park on the occasion of the 5th São Paulo Biennial in 1959.
The building has two exhibition halls, a technical depository (where the standing collection is kept), auditorium, studio, store and restaurant.
In order to enlarge its outreach in the Metro São Paulo region, MAM opened another unit in the Shopping Villa-Lobos mall, which is known as MAM – Espaço Villa-Lobos.
History
MAM is part of the cultural history of Latin America. It was founded in 1948 as one of the continent's first modern art museums by the Italo-Brazilian entrepreneur Francisco Matarazzo.
Its inauguration coincided with an important period for the institutionalization of Brazilian art that included the founding of the Museum of Art of São Paulo (MASP), the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM-RJ), the Vera Cruz cinema company, the Brazilian Comedy Theater (TBC) and the film library Cinemateca Brasileira.
